The public show considerable interest in data for small geographic areas and policy-makers require them it they are to be in a position to address key inequalities. This workshop will present both state of the art theory and recent empirical applications of small-area estimation. The theoretical topics will include estimation from a combination of survey and register data and the problems of small area estimation with very skewed populations. Empirical work will include two labour market issues, looking at union membership and worker skills, a study of the local effects of high-speed rail and three topics related to consumption, looking at local prices, measures of well-being and the link between small-area area statistics and consumer registers.

The workshop will be of interest both to those working on the development of small area techniques and those interest in their application.
