We investigate identification of causal parameters in case-control and related studies. We consider the odds ratio in the sample as the main estimand of interest and articulate its causal interpretation under various assumptions. Further, we propose semiparametrically efficient estimators for some averages of the log odds ratio. We develop methods for carrying out causal inference and provide results of Monte Carlo experiments and a real-data example.
